How to Upgrade and Improve the Performance of a Diesel Engine

Diesel engines are often referred to as the workhorse of engines, as they're meant for towing heavier weights and managing larger vehicles, and not designed for reaching higher speeds or for faster pickup from a full stop. While diesel engines are very strong and durable but not typically very fast, this doesn't mean you can't improve their performance; note a few tips for upgrading your vehicle's diesel engine, for higher speeds and for better fuel economy and performance.

Replace the computer or chip

A vehicle's computer is actually what controls many of its functions and performance; for example, when you put pressure on the gas pedal, the computer discerns how much fuel the fuel pump should send to the engine, based on that pressure. The computer also controls the oxygen sensor, which brings more air into the engine, allowing for combustion, and the amount of oxygen that is vented out the exhaust system. An upgraded computer or chip can send different signals to the fuel pump, sensors, exhaust system, and other such parts of a vehicle that control its speed, pickup, and overall performance. You'll then have better performance without having to change your overall driving habits or any other vehicle parts.

Upgrade the injectors

Upgraded fuel injectors will deliver more fuel to the engine quickly and easily, so that the engine produces more combustion. More combustion means more power, so the engine can accelerate faster, and also reach higher speeds. Upgraded injectors should also include an adjustment of the oxygen sensor, which controls the flow of oxygen into the engine. These two materials need to be balanced so that the engine doesn't run too hot or actually flood from having excess fuel.

High-flow exhaust system

A high-flow exhaust system allows more exhaust to be vented out and away from the engine. In turn, there will be less dirty air in the engine, slowing down its combustion. Venting more exhaust from a vehicle's engine also means that more fresh oxygen can be pulled into the engine, which also helps maintain proper and stronger combustion.

Enlarged tailpipes or dual tailpipes can improve your vehicle's exhaust system, or you can have a high-flow exhaust system custom made for your vehicle. This can include pipes that curve around other parts under the hood, rather than bending in harsh angles. Bends and corners in exhaust pipes slow down that flow of exhaust, whereas it's easier to vent bad air out of pipes that are curved.
